Danshui Taiwan 淡水

Danshui Taiwan 淡水 is a sea-side town in Taipei County, Taiwan. It is named after the Tamsui River whose name means "Freshwater". The town is also popular as a site for viewing the sun setting into the Taiwan Strait. Following the end of World War II, Tamsui reverted to being a small fishing town. With the expansion of nearby Taipei City, Tamsui slowly became a center for tourism along Taiwan's northwest coast. In the last ten years, the city has become popular as a suburb of Taipei in the local real estate market.

Danshui is most easily acccessed from Taipei by taking the MRT Danshui (Red) Line to its northern end at Danshui Station. The ride is roughly 40 minutes from Taipei Main Station. Following the completion of the Taipei Rapid Transit System's Danshui Line, the town has experienced a sharp increase in tourist traffic, reflected in the completion of several riverside parks, the growth of open-air markets specializing in traditional handicrafts, the construction of a fisherman's wharf, and the increase in passenger ferries traversing across and along the river.

Lover Bridge of Danshui, a white-colored Cable-stayed bridge, derived its name since it was started on February 14, 2003, Valentine's Day. The total length is approximately 196 meters and the walk across takes approximately 3 minutes. The "Lover's Bridge", a single slanted tower cable stay pedestrian bridge, that is modeled after a sailing ship's mast and rigging, spans the harbor. The bridge's illumination changes color at night, making this area a favorite with local couples and romantics, and is also a popular site for shooting Taiwanese drama serials.

Danshui Fisherman's Wharf (淡水漁人碼頭) is located further downstream from the town itself and offers a boardwalk, chic coffee shops, a slightly pricey seafood restaurant, and is a departure point for tourist boats traveling along Taiwan's scenic northeast coast. Outdoor concerts are sometimes held in the amphitheater.
